Although the 40/50hp model would have earned its 'the best car in the world' sobriquet in any event, rolls-royce's decision to drop all other types only served to focus attention on what would become known as the 'silver ghost'. The heart of the silver ghost was its magnificent engine, a 7,036cc (later 7,428cc) sidevalve six equipped with seven-bearing crankshaft and pressure lubrication. A sturdy chassis comprised of channel-section side members and tubular cross members was suspended on semi-elliptic springs at the front and a 'platform' leaf-spring arrangement at the rear, though the latter soon came in for revision. Chassis number '61 ne' was delivered from the factory on 7th june 1921 for bodying by rippon brothers of huddersfield, yorkshire, and was registered 'wa 4876' (a sheffield mark). Factory records show that the car remained in the yorkshire area in the hands of various owners, returning to the works for repairs on several occasions. A plaque on the dashboard records the name of one of these owners: gerald timmer-thomson of york lodge, beverley. The body was painted and lined by hand, and the rebuild completed in april 1962. In 1992 the engine was overhauled, since when only some 4,000-5,000 kilometres have been covered, while the convertible top was renewed in 1998. Because only two of its wheels are braked, this silver ghost is limited by swiss traffic laws to a maximum speed of 30km/h, although the car will easily exceed 100km/h. It is for this reason that the vendor has decided to part with the rolls-royce after 55 years of ownership by his family. Described as in generally very good condition, the car is offered with instruction book, parts catalogue, copy chassis cards, vehicle pass (1962), various photographs and swiss registration papers.

Stately open coachwork on the springfield silver ghost chassis, body 537· matching numbers, with original open bodywork· formerly owned by harry resnickrolls-royce maintained an american factory at springfield, massachusetts, from 1919 to 1931, where the silver ghost remained in production until 1926. In order to compete with other prestige manufacturers, rolls-royce set up a range of bodies to be sold under the name “rolls-royce custom coach work.” many of these were built by brewster, but some were commissioned by merrimac, willoughby, holbrook, and biddle & smart. They all carried the names of british landmarks: croydon and henley convertibles, st. Alban town cars, and the piccadilly roadster, to name but a few. Only 77 oxford examples were produced. Records from the rolls-royce foundation, copies of which are on file, record the delivery of chassis number 107jh to albert r. Hansen on april 20, 1924. Hansen was a chicago resident who both worked and lived in landmarks, the continental bank building at 208 south lasalle street and the horatio n. May house at 1443 astor street, respectively. The car was later acquired in 1957 by w. Schreiber and then again, in 1964, by dr. Bowers, of kokomo, indiana. From 1969 until 1980 it was the property of well-known east coast collector and rolls-royce enthusiast harry resnick, of channel master television antenna fame, and it was displayed at his well-known ellenville motor museum in new york. In december 1980 the rolls-royce was acquired from resnick by warren e. Spieker, of atherton, california. It eventually made its way into the blackhawk museum, where it was on prominent display for several years prior to its acquisition by the current owner. Capacious collapsible jump seats allow for seven-passenger occupancy on warm summer drives. The paint and interior have mellowed nicely and held up well throughout, as has the nickel trim on such components as the classic bausch & lomb headlamps. A complete frame off restoration has been performed. This car was recently serviced by vintage & auto rebuilds.
